CHAPTER 1V

FEMINISM PORTRAYED IN SHANDY'S CHARACTER SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS ON KARATE ISLAND SERIES

In this chapter,the writer tries to discussion the Spongebob Squarepants Karate island Series dealing with the main aspects like intrinsic,namely character,characterization, conflict and Setting. The discussion of thesis can be stated as follows:

4.1 Character of the play

Based of the theory of literature (1949) suggested by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren literature is a a social institution,it has close relation with the social reality because it represents life and life itself is a social reality. The writer accepts the character in the play as true representation of feminism portrayed.

In order to understand and to know the characters in the play ,the writer tries to figure out each character by observing what the author of the play says about the character,reading what other character in the play say about one another in the dialogue,observing general types,physically and psychologically, and interpreting the moral or ethical choices that determine a character's destiny (Barranger,1994: 339)

In do this ,the writer will analyze the main characters as well as secondary characters as well as the main characters support the plot and support the main characters to shape the whole story more lifelike

4.2. Character and Characterization of Shandy

There are two kinds of characters in Spongebob Squarepants Karate Island Series ,they are main characters and the sub character .Character based the characterization has important role in the story,is divided into two types : flat character and round character.

The creation of imaginary person looks like a real thing,which is called Characterization ( Holman:2003:88).

Feminism is a common word to be said today . It is all about the struggle of women in the world to get the same right against men. The emancipation of women is still rolling until now. Actually they cannot get an equal as men have ,but at least it is better than the women's circumstance at the past.

The characterization of shandy is that she is also very athletic and physically fit. She and SpongeBob share a favorite pastime of karate, and frequently fighting each other for fun. The karate they use appears to be stylized to fit that of "play karate", as they both mainly fight with chops and kicks in a cartoonish manner. There also appears to be other forms of fighting in the series, most notably in karate island, where three other fish demonstrate unique fighting styles, (which looks more like stylized versions of Kung Fu rather than Karate.)

Sandy has been one of SpongeBob's best friends, and she enjoys various activities such as karate with him. The nature of Sandy's relationship with SpongeBob is somewhat romantic. SpongeBob has brought her flowers on several occasions, and her official biography describes her as being "the apple of SpongeBob's eye (the only thing under the sea he likes better than his job at the Krusty Krab)".

Sandy also enjoys extreme sports and thrill-seeking, which SpongeBob also joins her in on the occasion. Sandy possesses immense strength, and is likely the strongest creature in Bikini Bottom. She is often seen lifting weights with larry lobster of whom she is a good friend, and other muscular fish, Sandy shows SpongeBob her immense biceps and an intense daily exercise routine.

Characterization of Sandy Cheeks from SpongeBob SquarePants

Sandy is smart, athletic and talented and therefore has many skills such as:

Ø Karate

Shandy is a female character, of all the characters in the show who practice Karate, Shandy is the best character which could play karate. She is smart and multitalented ,Sandy is one of the most intelligent and level-headed characters on the show. She is a multi-talented scientist and inventor, and originally came to study sea creatures and their lifestyles,especially Shandy has a good skill to play karate .

We can see from the following quotation :

l Master Udon:I am Master Udon.

l Sandy:Howdy, Master Udon, I'm Sandy Cheeks. I do a little karate, myself.

l SpongeBob:Sandy, Sandy, Sandy. Mr. Udon isn't interested in a karate novice like you. They only have time for royalty.

l Sandy:Oh, brother.

l Master Udon:Please, show me some of your moves, Master SpongeBob.

l SpongeBob:You hear that, Sandy? He called me "master". Bring on your best fighters! I'll try to go easy on 'em. [three fighters appear]

l Sandy:SpongeBob, your karate's not good enough to handle those sidewinders.

From the text above ,we saw that shandy is a woman which has good confident. Shandy introduction her self to Master Udon and Shandy explains that she could play karate better than else .

Ø Athletic

Sandy is also very athletic and physically fit. She and SpongeBob share a favorite pastime of karate, and frequently fight each other for fun. The karate they use appears to be stylized to fit that of "play karate", as they both mainly fight with chops and kicks in a cartoonish manner.

We can see from the following quotation :

l SpongeBob: Oh, do I detect a note of jealousy, Sandy?

l Shandy :Heck, I could karate you in a country fiddle with one one paw tied behind my back.

l SpongeBob:[laughs]But who's being crowned King of Karate -- not you.

l Sandy:I'm getting off this crazy train! [mumbles]

From the text above clearly that Shandy is athletic, although Shandy is female character she would show to Spongebob and Master Udon that Shandy could play karate easily. Shandy could show a different karate.

Ø Kind and Caring

Sandy is usually kind, and caring for Spongebob , Shandy is always help her friends when they have problem for example when Spongebob fight master udon,Shandy save Spongebob from Master Udon we can see from the following quotation:

l SpongeBob:Sandy, I'm sorry I acted like a jerk back there. Thanks for saving me from... [swallows hard] buying a condo.

l Sandy:Aw, shucks, SpongeBob, that's what friends are for.

From the text above ,Shandy is a good friend,Shandy is always kind and caring. For example when Spongebob have a problem with Master Udon Shandy always ready to save Spongebob . Although sometimes Shandy and spongebob have a different opinion Shandy shows that Shandy always care to Spongebob.

Not only kind and caring but also Shandy has some skills as Sandy has shown to have a vast knowledge of science, Sandy is a very good singer and Sandy was shown to drive a boat with the style of a jeep, and Sandy was shown to drive a boat with the style of a jeep etc

4.3 Shandy's Conflict

Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women.

Conflict is the problem or characters face in a story,there are two conflict in a story ,internal and external conflict ,Some Conflicts make the story become more interesting to read and analyze .

4.3.1 External Conflict

External conflict is a struggle that occurs between a character and outside forces, which could be another character or the environment and In literature, internal conflict is the struggle occurring within a character's mind. As opposed to external conflict, in which a character is grappling some force outside of him or herself, the dilemma posed by an internal conflict is usually some ethical or emotional question. The difference between external and internal conflicts? Internal conflict is conflict within the person and external conflict is conflict between the person and someone or something else.

SpongeBob SquarePants is not really a haven for feminists. shandy is definitely the strongest and smartest character,is accmpiomplished She at karate and bodybuilding, participates in rodeo championships, and then there’s that whole genius scientist thing.

SpongeBob is waxing Gary when the local mail fish shows up and hands SpongeBob a videotape. SpongeBob plays the tape on his TV, which says that he has been crowned "King of Karate" and tells him to go to "Karate Island" to be crowned.

SpongeBob is about to leave when he encounters Sandy, to whom he happily explains that he is the King of Karate. Sandy is suspicious of this, so she accompanies SpongeBob on the boat ride. The boat stops at Karate Island, where the guru, Master Udon, greets SpongeBob, but ignores Sandy. SpongeBob, to prove his Karate skills, asks to fight Master Udon's best guards. Three guards arrive, and when they fight SpongeBob, they pretend to get hurt and soon pretended to be defeated.

1. Shandy against Spongebob

Sandy notices this, adding to her suspicion. SpongeBob is officially crowned "King of Karate" and sits on his throne and requests Sandy to sit beside him in a lounge chair. Sandy leaves when SpongeBob becomes arrogantly proud and accuses her of being jealous of him. After she leaves, SpongeBob is suddenly locked into his throne. Just as the water is up to Sandy's head (she was walking into the water), she hears SpongeBob's cries for help, and reluctantly goes back to save him.

We can see from the following quotation :

SpongeBob:Hello, Sandy. Have you heard the news? I've been invited to Karate Island to be crowned the king of karate.

· Sandy:Karate Island? I've never heard of Karate Island.

· SpongeBob:Oh, sure, Sandy, all the big karate experts go there.

· Sandy:But my karate is better than your karate by a country mile and I've never been invited

From the text above ,clearly proves thats shandy is feminist. Shandy said that her karate better than Spongebob ,she thinks that although she is female but she smarter than males. On other Hand is what knows as liberal feminist. A liberal Feminist is one who seeks to attain equality with men,not by trying to change the system,but by working within the status quo. In thia case Shandy is female who has attained equality males.

2. Shandy againts Master Udon

Sandy fights through Udon's castle, fighting an opponent on each floor with an unusual "power" (there are three floors that Sandy has to get through) until she crashes through the top floor's entry way; the trapdoor where SpongeBob is being held hostage by Master Udon. Udon reveals that he is a real estate agent, and won't let SpongeBob go until he agrees to buy a time-share condo on the island, while also increasing his equity. He then tells SpongeBob he is not king of karate, but could be king of condos. SpongeBob shouts in horror and Sandy attempts to fight Udon, but he drops a sturdy movements and weird muttering. Master Udon rips off his robes while Sandy rips off her jumpsuit to expose her bikini and after a brief muscle growth in their swimsuits the two begin fighting, (Udon's extra muscles were in his eyebrows, and Sandy's were in her tail) and Sandy defeats Udon by kicking him out of the room into the water below. She frees SpongeBob, and the two leave the island.

We can see from the following quotation :

Sandy:Release SpongeBob.

· Master Udon:Never. [as Sandy is going to attack, she is trapped in a bird cage. She strains to break through but can't] He is forbidden to leave until...he signs this contract.

· Sandy:What are you talking about?

· Master Udon:Real estate.

· Sandy:You mean this whole thing was a scam to get us to buy real estate?

· Master Udon:Yes. If there was a real Karate Island, I'd be a millionaire.

From the text above, shandy ask master udon to release Spongebob,shandy is a brave women , Sandy is usually kind and caring for SpongeBob, she always help their friends when her friend having a problem.

The episode ends with Squidward arriving on "Clarinet Island" to be crowned "King of Clarinets," and him being looked down upon by Master Udon.

4.3.2 Internal Conflict

Internal conflict is a struggle of opposing forces within a character .it occurs in the character's own mind . It is a human internal problem. In the Spongebob Squarepants karate Island series there are some internal conflicts.

1. Shandy is Feminist ,she has ambitions to be king karate ,she show the best how to play karate . She realize that she having better skill than men . Shandy more Confident ,Shandy realize that herself could play karate .

4. 4 Setting

Setting is an important element in story because it is an aspect that forms the background of all incidents and events in the story. Kenney states that everything happens somewhere at sometime. That element of fiction which reveals to us where and when of event is setting. In other words,the term setting refers to the point of time and space at which the events of the plot occur ( 19996:38). A lot of authors make setting seriously because they know that setting is not just a frame for a story but also as a mean to determine character's motivations,aspiration,and condition in the story.

Setting is created by the writer to make the readers have an exact examination about the place, time and social condition about the event in the story. More than that setting makes the story, setting makes the story more realistic, like the real life, which makes the readers enjoys the story. If an author can depict the setting correctly so the story will become more alive .

The Setting of the story is a karate island,a beautiful island .

We can see from the following quotation :

· Mailman:Special delivery for SpongeBob SquarePants.

· SpongeBob:Special delivery? Just for me? You think I'm...special? [hugs the mailman]

· Mailman:Alright, do we have to go through this every time I give you your mail? Sheesh. [leaves]

· SpongeBob:What could it be today, Gary?

· Gary:Meow.

· SpongeBob:[opens package]A videotape? [reads it] "You're a winner -- SpongeBob SquarePants". I'm SpongeBob SquarePants! [inserts videotape into vcr. Videotape plays]

· Announcer:Karate Island: A serene and exotic location where nature and beauty abound, and hundreds of fighting styles collide in a wave of non-stop, pulsating, no-hold barred action! For centuries, the world's top karate artists have journeyed to this land to be crowned King of Karate.

From the text above ,clearly that the setting of the story is karate island. And setting of the times in 1986.

4.5 The personality of shandy

Sandy is usually kind and caring for SpongeBob, and is known to help him out when he's feeling lost as seen in newer episodes, however in older episodes she is shown to be more of a so-called "kook". For example in "Prehibernation Week," she is shown to be more crazy than ever when she forces SpongeBob to play rather dangerous games, thus leaving SpongeBob to run away. She then forced all Bikini Bottomites to search nonstop for days on end looking for him, to the point when they all ran and hid from her just like SpongeBob.

Another example , she cried several times throughout the episode because she missed Texas. SpongeBob and Patrick then made fun of Texas she was offended by SpongeBob and Patrick mocking Texas, and thus she chased both of them down.

She has also been shown to have a strong competitive streak and a high opinion of high opinion, she completely ignores SpongeBob's warnings about and tells him that she is "too Texas tough", only to discover the hard way that the Bull Worm is indeed too much for her to handle; in, she continuously brags that land creatures are better than sea creatures and nearly drowns herself in an attempt to "prove" it.

Sandy is shown during her hibernation as an obese, monstrous version of herself (prior to going into hibernation, animals must have tremendous amounts of body fat and energy reserves in order to survive the winter). SpongeBob and Patrick enter her snow-filled Treedome and disturb her sleep, and the semi-conscious Sandy viciously attacks them, believing them to be "Dirty Dan" and "Pinhead Larry", two outlaws from her dreams.

4.7 Moral Value of the Story

In Literary Criticism, feminism's goal is to change this degrading view of woman so that all women will realize that they are not a "non significant other", but that each woman is a valuable person processing the some privileges and right as every man. Woman feminist declare, must define themselves and assert their own voices in the arenas of politics, society, education and the arts (Bressler, 1999: 180)

After analyzing the Movie Spongebob Squarepants Karate Island Series,there are many moral value deviation found.

1. The writer thinks Shandy is kind of both. On one hand Shandy is the picture of feminism: a strong independent woman who set goals and achieves them without the help of men. Yet she was for a long time highly sexualised and aimed at men. It's quite the dichotomy.

2. Simply put, feminism is a belief that gender should not limit anyone's chances at life. Now that doesn't sound like such a terrible thing does it? Yet there are few words promulgating equality - a positive concept - that are seen as negative and prickly as the word "feminism".

Why the writer chose this movie for the lift in the thesis, as the writer saw shandy character in this movie is associated with the theory that the writer studied feminism. so the writer are interested in lifting the thesis . Sandy Cheeks is an astronaut, genius, rodeo star, adventurer and scientist. Hailing from the great state of Texas she overcame all odds, becoming the only land squirrel tough enough to brave the depths of the ocean. But what about her martial arts skills? Anybody who watches SpongeBob Squarepants can attest to Sandy Cheek’s Karate cred (or as they say on the show “kurah-tey“) She kicks Spongebob’s butt in every encounter breaking records, boards and bones.

Shandy character in this movie depicts the figure of the modern woman. he is not only smart but also independent, modern woman is a woman who continuously updating capabilities on a variety of things, has a vision of the future and is responsible in accordance with the nature.

The writer hope that this thesis could be useful for the readers, especially the generations of modern women, women are expected to be independent and can have a good skill because women is a mother of future leader.
